The CAST offers on-campus employment opportunities to Farmingdale State College students who are currently enrolled at least half part-time. Please see the position overviews posted below.

Peer Tutors provide high-quality tutoring for the Center for Academic Success & Tutoring (CAST). The ideal Peer Tutor is friendly and approachable, responsible and reliable, organized and efficient, and can work with a diverse student body while always maintaining a professional demeanor. The ideal candidate should also have solid interpersonal communication skills with a genuine desire to assist fellow students. Peer Tutors work directly with students to help them clarify course concepts and materials, develop effective ways to learn the material, share learning resources and study strategies, and provide general course-related guidance. The tutor may also help with special tutoring-related projects or other duties as assigned by the Director.

Job duties:

  • Conducting individual or small group tutoring sessions
  • Working directly with students to assist them with mastering their coursework
  • Being accurate, effective, and professional while tutoring
  • Preparing relevant materials for tutoring sessions
  • Maintaining punctuality with appointments and assigned tutoring hours for the semester
  • Ensuring tutoring session-related records are accurately documented and submitted
  • Adhering to and enforcing the Center’s policies and procedures
  • Respecting the private nature of tutoring sessions
  • Communicating with staff promptly
  • Partaking in staff meetings, training workshops, and the employee evaluation process
  • Participating in class visits, department meetings, or other outreach activities
  • Additional duties/responsibilities/projects may be assigned as needed by the Director

Minimum required qualifications:

  • Must be an FSC student who is currently enrolled at least half part-time (6 or more credits)
  • Must have at least a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher attained at FSC
  • Must have completed each course they wish to tutor with an A- or better
  • Must obtain faculty recommendation for each course they wish to tutor
  • Must be able to commit to an assigned weekly tutoring schedule for the semester
  • Must be in good academic and judicial standing

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior tutoring experience in an individual or small group setting
  • Must be sensitive to the student's needs and able to communicate and relate well with fellow students
  • An understanding of diverse learning styles and the ability to convey the material utilizing different approaches/methods
  • Solid technology skills, including specialty software used in courses

Additional information:

  • Tutors should have between 6 to 8 hours of availability per week for the entire semester, with at least two consecutive hours per shift. These hours will remain constant for the entire semester.
  • Tutoring positions are available as College Work-Study or Student Assistant.

2025 Hourly Rate: $17.50/hr

Please be advised: the Center does not offer tutoring in English/Writing or Mathematics. Students interested in tutoring those subjects should contact the Writing Center or Math Center for more information.

Student Success Coaches provide high-quality academic success coaching for the Center for Academic Success & Tutoring. The ideal Student Success Coach is friendly and approachable, responsible and reliable, organized and efficient, and can work with a diverse student body while maintaining a professional demeanor. The ideal candidate should also have solid interpersonal communication skills with a genuine desire to assist fellow students.

Unlike Peer Tutors who help students with specific course-related content, Student Success Coaches assist with developing academic success strategies for use in any course. Although Student Success Coaches are not academic advisors and cannot formally advise on which courses to take, they can provide a unique perspective from a student’s point of view on many different facets of college life. The coach may also help with special projects or other duties as assigned by the Director.

Job duties:

  • Coaching students in academic success topics (time management, note-taking, etc.).
  • Developing success resources that can be utilized by others
  • Leading or co-facilitating student success-themed activities or workshops
  • Being accurate, effective, and professional while coaching
  • Maintaining punctuality with appointments and assigned hours for the semester
  • Preparing relevant materials for upcoming appointments
  • Ensuring coaching session-related records are accurately documented and submitted
  • Adhering to and enforcing the Center’s policies and procedures
  • Respecting the private nature of coaching sessions
  • Communicating with staff promptly
  • Partaking in staff meetings, training workshops, and the employee evaluation process
  • Participating in class visits, department meetings, or other outreach activities
  • Additional duties/responsibilities/projects may be assigned as needed by the Director

  • Impeccable organizational and College success skills and strategies, including the ability to convey the following skills to students: campus resources, learning strategies, time management, organization, note-taking, and studying, among other related topics.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Must be sensitive to the student's needs and able to communicate and relate well with fellow students.

How to Apply

Step 1: Login to CareerConnect and search for "CAST - Peer Tutor"  to download a Peer Tutor Employment Application*. You may also e-mail us to request a PDF copy of the application at TutoringCenter@farmingdale.edu.

Step 2: Complete the application and be sure to include your availability and the courses you wish to tutor. Submit your application with a copy of your resume via CareerConnect or e-mail it to TutoringCenter@farmingdale.edu.

Step 3: Obtain faculty recommendation for each course you wish to tutor. Contact your course instructor or department chair and ask them to endorse you to tutor the course for the CAST. Faculty can access this form by visiting the CAST website and clicking on "Recommend a Peer Tutor or Success Coach". Note: this is a restricted access link only for current FSC faculty/staff. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the faculty recommendation has been submitted. Applications will not be reviewed by the hiring committee until the necessary faculty recommendation(s) have been received.

Step 4: The CAST hiring committee will review completed applications and schedule interviews with candidates whose availability and courses match the Center's needs for the semester.
