Student Communication

Dear Student:

Earlier this year the Federal government adopted the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Both current students and recent graduates are eligible for CARES awards. You are receiving this letter as a Farmingdale State College student who is eligible for direct assistance through CARES. This letter outlines the conditions and criteria used in determining your award.

FSC expects to receive approximately $6.1 million in CARES funding. Fifty percent of that funding (just over $3 million) must be used for the sole and exclusive purpose of providing emergency financial aid grants directly to students. A broad-based campus committee was established to develop a framework to allocate these funds to eligible students.

The CARES Act authorizes colleges to award grants to students for allowable expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Allowable expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, dependent care, transportation, and other expenses are included in the cost of attendance.

Farmingdale State College will award CARES Base Grants to all eligible students. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the funds will be distributed on a tiered basis to those Pell eligible students with the highest need based on Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Full-time students with an EFC of zero will receive the largest award of $1,000. The remaining 25% of the funds will also be distributed on a tiered basis to non-Pell eligible students who are Title IV eligible. Funds for each tier will be awarded based on EFC and will range from $150 to $1,000.

Please be advised that Student Accounts will communicate with eligible students via email by June 19. To receive a Base Grant, you must complete a CARES ACT BASE EMERGENCY GRANT CERTIFICATION form, which requires the student to verify that they have already spent, or will spend, the amount of the Base Grant on allowable expenses. On this form,
students also have the opportunity to replace the original Base Grant amount with a lower amount or decline their eligibility and the grant.

If funding remains once all Base Grant awards are processed, the College will inform eligible students that additional funds are available and will provide instructions on how to apply for these funds.

We very much look forward to your return to Farmingdale this fall with the hope that CARES funding will be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Dr. John Nader
