Request for Proposals

The Public Art Committee is seeking a prominent sculpture that reflects the mission, vision, and values of Farmingdale State College. Proposals are requested from artists interested in creating a new site-specific sculpture or proposing an installation on an existing work for the following site on the campus of Farmingdale State College.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Finalists will have the opportunity to meet with Farmingdale State College stakeholders and representatives of the FSC’s Public Arts Committee to learn more about the site and scope for the artwork.

All aspects of the site installation, including appropriate egress, special foundation, lighting, or underground electrical needs, will be approved and coordinated by Farmingdale State College Facilities and construction teams.

The chosen artist will be invited to participate in a public celebration and exhibition in the FSC Memorial Gallery  at the completion of the artwork(s).

The artist will allow Farmingdale State College, Marketing, & Public Relations department to arrange and coordinate media access/coverage. Only FSC Marketing, & Public Relations department will initiate and coordinate media coverage.

The artist(s) will allow FSC to share social media postings during the creation, fabrication, and installation of the artwork(s).


ARTISTIC OBJECTIVES

  • New works or existing works must be a minimum of 15’ tall and hold substantial presence for the installation site.
  • Works should be aesthetically palatable for a wide audience , capture attention, and engage our campus community
  • Submission of proposals for abstract, non-objective or representational works are welcome.
  • Aesthetically enhance the surrounding area and otherwise interact with its surrounding environment.
  • Artwork should be constructed of permanent, durable materials, and preferably be maintenance-free
  • Must be able to be anchored to the base to prevent the sculpture from being removed, tipped, broken or overturned.
  • Must be capable of permanently withstanding the elements, high winds, and the high traffic nature of the site.

BUDGET

An amount up to $35,000 is available for all related expenses of the Farmingdale State College commission, including (but not limited to) artist fees, materials, fabrication, artists insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, etc.


APPLICATION AND SUBMISSION OF PROJECT PROPOSAL

Complete and submit the Request for Proposal form by the stated deadline. There is no application fee.

Artist collectives or teams team should prepare a single application for a submission, including names and contact information for all team members. One artist must be listed as the primary artist on the application.

Attach the following items to the submission form to complete your application:

  1. Artist's Contact Information & Biography

    Include name, business name (if applicable), physical address, mailing address, telephone and email. Teams must identify one artist to be the primary contact for the team, as well as contact information for each artist on the team. Please provide a biography for each artist if applying as a team.
  2. Conceptual Statement

    A written concept/artist(s) statement that addresses interest specific to the mission, vision, and values of the college, philosophy of public art, and relevant experience. Also include a description of the theme or concept as related to the project description statement and description of how the proposed location of art will relate to and enhance the site. Last, describe the probable form the artwork will take including scale, format, color, and surface material/quality. (three pages maximum).
  3. Resume/Curriculum Vitae                                                                             

    Two pages max; Teams must submit a CV for each artist on the team with a total of two pages per team member.
  4. Proposal Presentation

    PowerPoint /or Google slide presentation of prior work & proposed works.

Guidelines for the PowerPoint/Google Slide Media & Specifications 
Applicants should include examples of past works that use similar forms, materials, and techniques relating to the artist's concept, including up to eight slides with jpeg images of individual previous works. Presentations should include up to eight slides with images, sketch, diagrams of proposed work for consideration.

Each slide should include one image, the artist name, title of the work, medium, dimensions, and date of completion on the left-hand side of the slide.

  1. Itemized Budget

    Including preliminary costs for all aspects of the proposed project, i.e. design, fabrication, installation, insurance, engineering documents, permits, contingency, etc.

Two references will be requested from the finalists.

Finalists will be expected to provide a scale model of the existing or proposed work after the first round. The commissioned artist will be selected based on their proposal and qualifications.


PROPOSED SELECTION PROCESS & SCHEDULE

This solicitation process is being undertaken to enable Farmingdale State College Public Arts Committee to identify the appropriate work for commission and artist for this opportunity.

Submissions will be judged/scored on the following,

  • Artistic quality of proposed artwork.
  • Appropriateness of proposed artwork to the site and theme of the project.
  • Experience with public art installations.
  • Permanence, durability, maintainability and use of high-quality materials.
  • Absence of hazards to the public.
  • Innovation in use of materials and techniques.
  • Ability of the artist to create and install the artwork within the established timeframe.

Timeline


ELIGIBILITY

The project is open to all established and professional artists in the United States, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Artist teams are eligible to apply, including teams of artists from multiple disciplines.

Applicants should have a proven history of successful prior projects including; creating, fabricating and installing public art. Only artists with reviewable portfolios are eligible to submit proposals. Applicants who wish to be considered for this project should have experience creating durable outdoor public art pieces, working within the public process, proven ability to fabricate their own work/designs or to work with fabricators and installers. Artists working in a variety of materials are encouraged to apply.

The selected artist(s) will enter into a contract with FSC to produce, deliver and install the work of art at a mutually agreed upon time.

Applicants may also upload a link to the PowerPoint/Google slide presentation to the form. (Please have link permissions set appropriately so the Committee can access and review.)

Applicants may also provide hyperlinks for up to two reviews or two pieces of media collateral of relevant artwork reviews embedded into your PowerPoint/Google slide presentation.

Note: Models or original works of art will not be accepted during the initial RFP submission stage.
