Recycle with FSC

RECYCLING AT FSC

Recycling can be a confusing and unclear process. Here at FSC, we are dedicated to making it as clear and accessible as possible for all our students and employees. When going to recycle, look for our green FSC three compartment sorting bins around campus. The receptacles are labeled for the sorting of different materials: cans and bottles, paper, and trash.

Blue recycling bins are placed in individual offices around campus. These bins are for paper only and must be emptied into the central recycling bins by each individual - custodial will not take recycling products. All bottles and cans for recycling must be put directly in central recycling bins. Once a central recycling bin is full, simply put in a work order and Facilities and Operations will promptly empty it. Have more questions? Contact our Sustainability Manager for more information.

Individual action

What can I do?

There is a lot that individuals can do to reduce their waste and carbon footprint. Beyond campus engagement, you can bring your recycling habits home with you! Check out your local municipality's website for information on how to recycle at home. You can even compost your organic waste at home - learn how here!

WHAT MATERIALS CAN I RECYCLE?

The recycling bins placed around campus are separated into three sections. Only clean, uncontaminated items will be accepted at the recycling facility.

All plastic bottles (water, Gatorade, soda, etc.) and aluminum cans (soda, seltzers, etc.), and glass should be placed in the bottles and cans receptacle. Soft plastic such as plastic bags and wrappers are not recyclable.

Computer paper, cardboard, newspapers, and magazines can be recycled. Pizza boxes, shredded paper, paper plates and napkins are not recyclable.

All other contents that cannot be reused or recycled can be placed in the trash bin for disposal. This currently includes organic waste. Composting will be implemented in select locations at FSC soon.

Do you know how to compost?

Composting is easy - start today!

Billions of pounds of food go to waste every year in the U.S., food that often ends up in landfills, contributing to the production of climate-warming methane. Reducing food waste can help the environment, and there are also ways that food can be kept out of landfills and put to use. One of the most common and easiest ways to turn food waste into something valuable is by composting. Composting is a natural way to turn food waste into fertilizer that’s high in nutrients.

RECYCLING FOR RESIDENTS

Taking out garbage and recycling are the responsibility of the residents within each resident hall. Each hallway within our resident halls have green FSC sorting bins for recyclables.

WASTE REDUCTION EVENTS, PROGRAMS, AND POLICIES

The phrase 'Green Then. Green Now.' reflects Farmingdale's proud history of environmental stewardship since its founding in 1912. To support that legacy, Farmingdale State College has joined a national program called Call2Recycle™ to conveniently recycle used rechargeable batteries and old cell phones generated on Campus. This program will strengthen and enhance FSC's existing recycling programs by providing more convenient and safe disposal options for these particular waste streams to the Campus Community.

Participating in this new program is easy - simply bring your spent/old/unwanted rechargeable batteries and/or old cell phones to any of the locations on Campus where a Call2Recycle™ collection box has been set up, follow the packaging instructions that are posted at each box location and on each box itself and you're done! It's that simple.

In an effort to further strengthen the College's commitment to sustainability, the College implemented a Bottled Water Policy to reduce the role of bottled water on campus. Free hydration stations can be found across campus.

For the last 15 years, the College bookstore has used Oak Hall to supply sustainable caps and gowns to the campus. Caps and gowns are made of 100% post consumer plastic bottles. Over 4,100,000 students have worn GreenWeaver regalia at their commencement, resulting in millions of plastic bottles being removed from landfills.

Conducting waste audits are an important way in which FSC is beginning to better understand and manage its waste. These are done so we know which materials are being improperly disposed of and which materials we should target and eliminate from our waste stream. By better upstanding what we throw out, we can make our operations more efficient and environmentally friendly. Audits are conducted semesterly.
