Getting Started for Students
If you are interested in enrolling in a COIL/Global Classroom course, in Oasis you can search for courses that fulfil the requirements for COIL under the Class Schedule Search function. In the Attribute Type drop-down menu, you will find two COIL course categories: (1) COIL Civic Engagement, or (2) COIL Civic Engagement Enhanced.
For more information about the Applied Learning requirements, please click here.
If you are enrolled in a COIL/Global Classroom course, you must successfully complete the COIL portion of the course to pass the class. Since a COIL course fulfills the requirements for the Applied Learning/Civic Engagement COIL, all applied learning components must be successfully completed to receive course credit. Failure to fulfil this requirement will result in a failing grade in the course and require you to retake the course or complete the Applied Learning graduation requirement in an alternate format. Since COIL courses can be either enhanced (5 hours) or full (10 hours), make sure you are aware of which of the two options your course fulfills, in terms of completing the Applied Learning requirements you need to meet for graduation:
- Applied Learning Course (credit bearing): A course designated as a full Applied Learning
Course requires that students complete a minimum of 10 hours of applied activity.
- Applied Learning Enhanced Course (credit bearing): A course designated as an Applied Learning Enhanced course requires a minimum of 5 hours of applied activity
COIL courses can also be utilized as part of earning a Microcredential in either Global Learning COIL and the Global and Cultural Awareness. Click on the links above to see whether these would come into question for you. Note that double dipping is not permitted, meaning that a COIL course can satisfy the requirements for only one Microcredential.
Student Considerations:
- Registration for COIL courses follows the same registration process as all other courses.
- Students are expected to be familiar with technical and distance learning requirements.
- COIL courses receive designation in the Applied Learning Category Legend on the Semester Course Offering pages.
- COIL courses fulfill Applied Learning criteria in the Civic Engagement category, therefore all COIL components must be successfully completed to receive course credit.
- Students seeking general information related to COIL should contact the COIL Coordinator at coil@farmingdale.edu. Students seeking advisement related to COIL should contact the faculty who teaches the COIL course or their academic advisor.
