Christopher LaBarbera
Assistant Provost
Dr. Christopher LaBarbera is currently Assistant Provost at Farmingdale State College State College. In this role, Dr. LaBarbera supports the College's academic initiatives and oversees Distance Learning, the Faculty Center, the NEXUS Center for Career Development and Applied Learning, as well as the area of Microcredentials.
Prior to this position, Dr. LaBarbera served as the Assistant Provost and Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at MassBay Community College for ten years. While serving as Dean, he oversaw the very successful college-wide OneBook Project, established the Commonwealth Honors Program to the College, and served as co-chair for the College’s Professional Development Day Committee. Dr. LaBarbera also served as Interim Provost at MassBay during a presidential transition.
Dr. LaBarbera formerly served as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire and the Assistant Dean of Continuing Education at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in Manchester, New Hampshire. Dr. LaBarbera holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Stony Brook University. He has presented recently on issues in higher education today, including the equity agenda, the expansion of open educational resources, and the effect of High-Impact Practices (HIPs) on student outcomes.
He is the author of several academic articles on topics in bioethics, gender studies, and philosophy, as well as one book, States of Nature.
