Dental Hygiene Continuing Education
Mandatory Continuing Education
On July 11, 1996, Bill 7324A was passed by the Senate and the Assembly stating registered dental hygienists are required to complete a minimum of 24 contact hours of continuing education every TRIENNIAL registration period, inclusive of an approved infection control training course every four years, and a one-time only mandatory child abuse course approved by the State Education Department. Farmingdale State College is an approved provider of continuing education credits in New York State for both dental hygienists and dentists; the American Academy of Dental Hygiene is the approved NYS sponsor.

NYS CHILD ABUSE AND MALTREATMENT/NEGLECT MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING WORKSHOP
The New York State Education Law requires that individuals in specified professions be certified in child abuse (i.e. NYS Child Abuse Certification). That is, that they complete two hours of approved coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse as a condition of licensure. This training is valid only from a New York State Education Department approved provider.
NYS Child Abuse Certification is required for the following professions: Certified Behavior Analyst Assistants, Chiropractors, Creative Arts Therapists, Dental Hygienists, Dentists, Licensed Behavior Analysts, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Master Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Mental Health Counselors, Optometrists, Physicians, Podiatrists, Psychoanalysts, Psychologists and Registered Nurses. The Law also includes this New York child abuse identification training for mandated reporters among the requirements for certification or licensure of school administrators/supervisors, school service personnel, and classroom school teachers. All persons applying for such positions must have completed the required coursework or training. The above professionals are required to report when they have reasonable cause to suspect that a child has been abused or maltreated/neglected.
Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training for all Mandated Reporter trainees. Mandated Reporter trainees must have completed the updated training curriculum by April 1, 2025. Laboratory Consultation Services, Inc, has been providing the updated training since November 2023. If your training was completed prior to then, you must repeat the course by April 1, 2025.
At the end of this training the participant will be able to:
- Define what constitutes abuse, maltreatment, and neglect according to New York State family Court Act and Social Services Law
- Be able to determine if a child shows indicators of maltreatment or abuse, including in a virtual setting
- Distinguish among various behavioral and environmental characteristics of abusive parents or caretakers
- Recognize the impact of trauma and ACEs on children, families, and yourself
- Recognize the mitigating effects of the five protective factors on trauma
- Recognize the impact of bias on your decision-making
- Understand when you have a legal obligation to call the SCR
- Recognize how you may better connect individuals and families with services
- Know how to prepare to make the call to the SCR
- Know what to do after making a call to SCR & how to complete the LDSS 2221A form
- Understand your rights as a mandated reporter

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
How many total credits do RDH's need within a three year licensure period?
How many credits within a licensure period can be taken virtually?
How many credits must be "live" within a licensure period?
Of the 24 credits that are required during each registration period, 14 must be live courses.
What makes a virtual online course "live"?
Live courses are those in which you are able to interact with the instructor. For example: a live lecture, telecourse or teleconference in which you and the instructor can speak directly with each other or there is a live Q & A portions at the conclusion of the class constitute a live course. A pre-taped lecture with no means of direct interaction would not be acceptable as a live course even if it is a live telecast.
CLASS REQUIREMENTS
How often is a CE in infection control needed?
Infection control is required once every four years, which, in New York State works out to be once every other triennial registration period.
How often is a CE in child abuse needed?
Updated Mandated Reporter Training Requirements. Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. While it is recommended to remain current with child abuse training, NYS mandates one updated training since 2021, and prior to April 2025, until further notice.
The dental hygiene continuing education department at Farmingdale State College will be conducting this course update in the coming months. Please keep watch in our "Save the Date" section above for upcoming dates to satisfy this required training.
