MICRONUTRIENTS & PERIODONTAL HEALTH
This presentation explores the critical role of micronutrients in maintaining oral
health, highlighting the intricate connections between nutrition and oral conditions
such as periodontal disease, caries, and oral cancer. Micronutrients like vitamins
A, C, D, calcium, and zinc are essential for maintaining the integrity of oral tissues,
promoting wound healing, and supporting the immune response. The presentation will
delve into how deficiencies in these micronutrients can exacerbate oral health issues,
as well as discuss the latest research on micronutrient supplementation as a potential
intervention. Additionally, the presentation will cover the impact of dietary choices
on oral health and the importance of a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients for
the prevention and management of oral diseases. This presentation is designed for
dental hygienists interested in enhancing their understanding of the intersection
between nutrition and oral health to improve patient outcomes.
After completion of this course, the attendee will be able to:
- Identify the key micronutrients essential for oral health and their specific roles in maintaining oral tissue integrity and immune function
- Explore how deficiencies in specific micronutrients contribute to the development and progression of oral diseases
- Examine the relationship between dietary habits and oral health, focusing on how nutrient-rich diets can prevent or mitigate oral diseases
- Discuss the potential benefits of micronutrient supplementation in managing and preventing oral health issues
- Review the latest research on micronutrients and oral health, including studies on the effectiveness of supplementation in clinical practice

LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
How many total credits do RDH's need within a three year licensure period?
How many credits within a licensure period can be taken virtually?
How many credits must be "live" within a licensure period?
Of the 24 credits that are required during each registration period, 14 must be live courses.
What makes a virtual online course "live"?
Live courses are those in which you are able to interact with the instructor. For example: a live lecture, telecourse or teleconference in which you and the instructor can speak directly with each other or there is a live Q & A portions at the conclusion of the class constitute a live course. A pre-taped lecture with no means of direct interaction would not be acceptable as a live course even if it is a live telecast.
CLASS REQUIREMENTS
How often is a CE in infection control needed?
Infection control is required once every four years, which, in New York State works out to be once every other triennial registration period.
How often is a CE in child abuse needed?
Updated Mandated Reporter Training Requirements. Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. While it is recommended to remain current with child abuse training, NYS mandates one updated training since 2021, and prior to April 2025, until further notice.
The dental hygiene continuing education department at Farmingdale State College will be conducting this course update in the coming months. Please keep watch in our "Save the Date" section above for upcoming dates to satisfy this required training.
What constitutes a valid CPR/BLS CE course?
