Geospatial Thinking for Teachers

Earners of this microcredential will improve their ability to think geospatially, gain technical skills in the operation of GIS and spatial data analysis, as well as develop the capacity to deploy these technologies in the creation and modification of educational materials and curriculum. This microcredential will be of particular interest to anyone who wants to gain a fundamental understanding of GIS and spatial thinking and apply that understanding within the realm of education and curriculum development. This microcredential is intended for current K-12 educators and qualifies as Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) for up to 45 clock hours.

Who should attend?

Holders of professional classroom teaching certificates, educational leadership certificates, and Level III teaching assistant certificates who practice in a NYS School District or BOCES.

Description

In this workshop, participants will learn fundamental GIS concepts such as data types, spatial reasoning, and cartographic principles. They will also be taught basic navigation and utilization of ArcGIS Online and other browser based GIS tools. Participants will complete, review, and modify short-form GIS education materials (e.g. <15 minute) such as ESRI geo-inquiries across a wide array of subjects. Participants will leave this workshop with one or more ready-to-use, short-form learning materials customized to their desired course content.

Requirements to earn the microcredential:

Participants will also the ability to receive a Microcredential/Digital Badge at the successful completion of a series of three workshops:

Required workshops:

  • Using GIS To Enhance The Learning Experience (15 hours)
  • Integrating GIS Activities Into the Modern Classroom (15 hours)

Participants must also complete at least one of the following workshops:

  • Digital Earth (15 hours)
  • Geospatial Research Methods (15 hours)
  • GIS for Student Research and Citizen Science (15 hours)

Upon completion of the three workshops, the student will also submit a final portfolio with a sample syllabus and/or sample curriculum for a GIS course that will be evaluated by the Department microcredential advisor prior to the award of the microcredential.
