Global Civics
Global Civics is an innovative initiative from the Office of Community Engagement at Farmingdale State College (FSC) that promotes global civic education, sustainable development, and awareness of “glocal” issues—local actions with global significance. The initiative empowers students to become globally conscious citizens, engaging with both global challenges and local solutions while interdependently anchoring these area to their academic and professional pursuits.
What we do
Key elements of Global Civics Horizons include:
- Global Affairs Education: Through seminars, guest speakers, and discussions, students are introduced to pressing global issues such as climate change, human rights, and global governance. These events help foster a global mindset by connecting international challenges to local actions.
- Focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The program integrates the United Nations'
17 SDGs, offering workshops and hands-on projects that align with these goals. Students
learn how they can contribute to global efforts like reducing inequality, promoting
clean energy, and advancing sustainable communities.
Glocal Engagement: Emphasizing the idea that local actions have global impacts, students participate in community projects, environmental initiatives, and partnerships with local organizations that contribute to solving global challenges. - Global Civic Leadership Program: This leadership track equips students with the skills to advocate for global causes. Students are trained through campus collaboration in leadership development, public speaking, and policy advocacy, empowering them to take active roles in driving global change through local initiatives.
- International Service-Learning: Through international service-learning opportunities provided through on campus departments, students engage in hands-on projects that address global challenges, offering them the chance to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts while gaining valuable cross-cultural experiences.
Global Civics Initiative prepares FSC students to be leaders in a globally interconnected world. By promoting civic responsibility and action, the initiative helps students realize how their local efforts can contribute to meaningful global progress.
