Farmingdale State College professors Dr. Jennifer Bryer and Dr. Luisa Nappo-Dattoma have been honored by SUNY with its Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
The Chancellor’s Award is conferred to acknowledge and provide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence. Through these awards, SUNY publicly proclaims its pride in the accomplishment and personal dedication of its instructional faculty, librarians and professional staff across its campuses.
Dr. Bryer is an associate professor of nursing at Farmingdale’s Theresa Patnode Santmann School of Health Sciences. She is also chair of the nursing department, and is a registered nurse in New York State.
Her students have called her “an amazing instructor,” one who “truly cares about our success in the classroom and the future.” Another acknowledged her role as a student mentor, and cited her as a “great professor to work with.”
Dr. Bryer is involved in the community as well, organizing the Farmingdale Student Nurse Outreach Program, and participating in the Town of Hempstead Flu Shot Program. She is also a member of the Long Island Works Speakers Bureau.
She belongs to the National League for Nursing, the New York State Nurses Association, and the American Nurses Association, and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing honor society. She holds a PhD in Nursing Research from Rutgers University, an MS in Nursing Education from Molloy College, and a BS in Nursing from Regents College.
Dr. Nappo-Dattoma also works in the Theresa Patnode Santmann School of Health Sciences, as an associate professor of dental hygiene. One of her colleagues said about her: “She has demonstrated time and again that she is an exceptional academic advisor and a gifted teacher. She is the perfect role model for a teacher, who knows how to motivate her students to strive for excellence.”
She authored a chapter on diet and dietary analysis for Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist, a textbook used in dental hygiene programs in the U.S. and beyond. She is also a prolific writer, having published more than a dozen articles on her areas of expertise.
Dr. Nappo-Dattoma is secretary of the NYS Dental Hygiene Educators’ Association, and holds memberships in the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, the American Dental Education Association, the American Dietetic Association, and Sigma Phi Alpha, the honor society for dental hygienists. She earned her EdD in College Teaching at Columbia University; the MS in Nutritional Science at LIU/Post; and the BS in Dental Hygiene at Thomas Jefferson University.
