Protect New York, an academic and professional think tank devoted to research and education to help protect New Yorkers from terrorism and natural disasters, has found a new home at Farmingdale State College.
The organization, which was founded in 2006, will be housed in the Department of Criminal Justice at Farmingdale’s School of Arts & Sciences. Its previous headquarters was at SUNY’s Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government in Albany.
According to John Kostanoski, former president of the organization and professor of criminal justice at Farmingdale, the college was selected from among a host of SUNY schools because of its long history and strong academic programs in the protection field. Once the group is up and running, students in the criminal justice program will be offered student memberships leading to professional networking opportunities.
“Hosting Protect New York at Farmingdale State College is recognition of the importance of the contributions of the college over the past 50 years to the field of police education,” says Professor Kostanoski. “Protect New York will serve as a center for collaboration and communication within the protective sciences.”
Protect New York represents a variety of disciplines, including criminal justice, psychiatry, sociology, public health, engineering, business management and media studies. Membership is open to college faculty and administrators, and professionals working in the fields of emergency management, disaster planning, and homeland security.
