2025 International Mother Language Day

Beyond Words - Languages and Resilience

Celebrate International Mother Language Day!

Join the Department of Modern Languages & the Office of DEI for an exciting presentation on the richness of communicational approaches adopted by diverse cultures.

Languages are a cultural expression of a community. They are gestures of relationships and simultaneously they are systems of communication that transcend the spoken word. People share and exchange their languages  through music, photography, bodies, painting, poetry, and a million other ways they use to express themselves.  Sometimes they aim to reach out, other times they want to push away, and always they want to be heard. The question is who is listening? What strategies do the “small voices” of minorities, social activists, and marginalized groups employ to overcome the deafening rumble of the ruling majority?

Calling All Interested Members of the FSC Community to Participate!

Are you a dancer, a musician, a singer, a painter, a photographer, a videographer, a podcaster, a hacker, a programmer, a writer, a performer? How do you and your community resist “cultural muffling"? How do you express what makes your community unique? How do you make your voice heard?

We invite students, faculty and staff to share with the FSC community a short talk, art work, or performance representing musical, pictorial, bodily, material, or digital expressions of communicative resilience.
Please submit your proposal by 11/10/2024 using THIS FORM.
