Celebrating Being Indigenous Latinx: Contemporaneous Music in Indigenous Languages from Latinx America

This presentation explores the recent surge of Latin American music that showcases indigenous languages with international and urban musical genres. Some examples are the Mayan Mexican band ADN Colectivo Maya (who appeared in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s soundtrack) and the Quechua-Peruvian musicians Renata Flores and Liberato Kani. Rather than frozen-in-time folklore, their musical production combines indigenous sounds with the modern rhythms of hip-hop, trap, and electronics. Despite the historical erasure and marginalization of indigeneity in Latin America, these artists reclaim their indigenous heritage to support their communities' struggles against ongoing colonization.

Join us for a fun and informative presentation by Dr. Javier Muñoz-Díaz, Assistant Professor of Spanish.
