Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP, also known as Food Stamps or EBT, is a federally-funded program designed to assist individuals and families with food costs. In NYS

SNAP benefits come on a Common Benefit Identification Card, or CBIC. It can be used like a debit card to purchase food at grocery stores or farmers' markets.

SNAP can help you purchase any food for the household, such as:

  • Fruits and vegetables;
  • Meat, poultry, and fish;
  • Dairy products;
  • Bread and cereals;
  • Snacks and beverages;
  • Seeds and plants to grow for your family.

There are certain items/goods that SNAP cannot be used to purchase:

  • Beer, wine, and liquor;
  • Vitamins, medicine, and supplements;
  • Foods that are hot at the point of sale;
  • Any non-food items, such as:
    • Pet food,
    • Cleaning supplies,
    • hygiene items.
