Dr. Nazrul Islam By Rafia Quazi (关菲亚)
Interviewing Dr. Nazrul Islam was a very interesting experience. To him, the Asian figures that people should know about are Mahatma Gandhi of India, Sheikh Mujibar Rahman of Bangladesh, Rabindranath Tagore of India, and Abdus Salam of Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibar Rahman was the former prime minister of Bangladesh. Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Peace Prize in literature. Abdus Salam won the Nobel Peace Prize in physics. Dr. Islam hopes to see that the Asian community can bring their culture and positive views into their work and help merge into American culture and build a good society. He hopes that the Asian community can break any misunderstandings that there are. His proudest career accomplishment was that he was selected as a senior member in IEEE, the world’s largest professional engineering community. Also, he was a chair member of the IEEE. To make the Asian identity his own he tries to blend the cultures together and brings the positive aspects into the American culture. Feb 21st is the international mother language day. This day is based on a historical event that occurred in Bangladesh in 1952. Dr. Islam proposed that International Mother Language day be observed in Farmingdale. It has been successful for five years so far. He also participates in the multicultural gala to help represent his culture and religion.
