Images in Web Content

Adding images to your web content makes it palatable, user friendly, and can provide a better user experience. Images are versatile, but they need to be added while keep accessibility in mind and not replace text based information.

As content contributors it is important for you to understand that not all of your audience is the same. Some users may have impaired vision, some may have color blindness, and some may not be able to see at all. It is crucial to accommodate those users, so that information is presented in an equitable manner. To ensure that all types of users are taken into consideration, it is necessary to review images that exist on the website along with reviewing/testing newer images that are to be uploaded to various web pages.

There are three main categories of images for the website:

  1. Informative
  2. Decorative
  3. Functional

Informative images are those that are added to inform a user alongside some other means like audio or text

Decorative images are those that are added for user experience and do not serve direct purpose to explain or expand upon existing content

Functional images are those that serve a clear purpose. For example an image of a company logo that may be used as link to go that company's website or website homepage.
