Today, more than ever, there is a great demand for employees with specialized office skills. The areas of concentration in the Business Careers & Technologies Department will provide you with the training to obtain a variety of entry-level positions, as well as the opportunity for upward mobility. Instruction is individualized so that the varying needs and competencies of all students can be met.  Academic Skills Preparation  

The Academic Skills Preparation program is designed to develop reading and math skills for individuals who do not meet the entry level requirements for College Prep, Career Prep, or the Business Ed programs. This program is sequential, and is divided into modules. Study skills, life skills, and computer-assisted learning are essential parts of this program.

English for International Students

This is a three-level program in English as a Second language for adults. The courses cover the skills of listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary improvement and writing American English, with particular emphasis on listening and speaking.

Computers are used to help students practice and use grammar skills.

High School Equivalency

This is a sixteen-hour per week instructional program designed to prepare students to obtain a High School Equivalency Diploma (GED). The curriculum addresses the GED 2002 test format, which includes reading, math, science, social studies, and writing. Support courses in study skills, life skills, test taking strategies, and computer-assisted learning are integrated.

BRIDGE

Now in its second decade of operation, the LIEOC has trained countless persons for college entry and well paying jobs in the public and private sectors. The Bridge Program is one component of the LIEOC. Participants of the Bridge Program are mandated to find and keep employment for beyond 90 days.

Career Preparation:

Certified Nurse Assistant Program

This New York State accredited program covers the basic bedside nursing skills necessary to obtain employment in acute or long-term health care facilities. Interwoven throughout the program is a 15-hour Life Skills program. Top-notch training includes a 3-week internship where you learn theory and medical ethics, while obtaining clinical supervision in some of the best nursing home facilities on Long Island.Students who successfully complete the 10-week, 200-hour course will be eligible to take the Nurse Assistant exam, which qualifies students for a listing in the New York State Registry.

Requirements include a complete physical exam, purchase of a designated uniform, a fee of $115 for the state exam, basic reading skills, and an empathetic, caring attitude toward the elderly.

Rehabilitation Assistant - Occupational/Physical Therapist Aide

The Rehabilitation Assistant program is to provide students with the skills, knowledge and behaviors necessary to obtain employment in the health care field in various settings.   Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy aides assist patients in moving to and from treatment areas as well as assist with positioning and securing patients to the therapy equipment under supervision of the physical therapist or physical therapist assistant. The aide also may assist patients in dressing or undressing and applying or removing supportive and assistive devices.   Physical therapy / Occupational therapy aides have a variety of tasks which vary from answering phones, appointment setting, ordering supplies and obtaining pertinent patient/client information for completing insurance forms for proper insurance re-imbursement.

At the completion of the program, the student will have met the program requirements for the coursework and be eligible for entry level employment. The course is also designed to assist students enhance their communication, organizational, interpersonal and time management skills. This course will allow the students to expand their knowledge and confidence level in the health field and possibly acquire necessary coursework for college bound students interested in becoming Physical Therapy Assistants or Physical Therapists.

LPN Prep

This course is designed to prepare students for the entry exam to an LPN Training Program. Basic skills in English, Math, Anatomy & Physiology, and test-taking are covered.

VizTech
Visual Technology Program:

Get connected to your future! Learn the basics of computer technology, graphic design, animation, surfing the web, sending/receiving e-mail or designing web pages. Obtain marketable skills necessary to compete in today’s job market. With any or all of the VizTech courses* offered, your future is in your hands! The LIEOC student or alum is also given the opportunity to become entrepreneurs through the Entrepreneur Technology Center (ET Center,) by working with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) on Farmingdale’s campus and by attending a series of workshops* on How to Start Your Own Business.

Photoshop ( Introduction )


An introduction to the basic use of Adobe’s Photoshop® to maximize the quality of images. The student will explore the imaging tools, create drop shadows, embossing, and other basic effects necessary to optimize photographic and graphic images for print and the web.

Prerequisite: Desktop Publishing or similar experience.

 

Flash ( Introduction )

An introduction to basic animation using Macromedia’s Flash®. The student will design an interactive site and publish a Flash® movie using basic motion and shape animation without having to write a line of code.

Prerequisite: Desktop Publishing or similar experience, no previous Flash experience necessary.

Basic Drawing Techniques

Using the most basic tools (pencil/charcoal), this course will journey into the world of the black and white medium ... the simplest way to expose the novice student to the principles of drawing. The course will touch on the theory of perspective, the basic principles of drawing still-life, landscapes and the human figure, and will begin to assist the student in the preparation of a portfolio.

Prerequisite: An interest in pursuing drawing or graphic design.

Computer Graphic Design

The Computer Graphic Design (CGD) course introduces the student to the basic concept of graphic design as a means of adding impact to the written word, introducing new features of graphic design that will allow the student to create publications such as a newsletter and brochures using QuarkXpress® and Photoshop®.

Prerequisite: Basic computer skills required.

Introduction to the Internet

This course introduces the student to the basic concept of the Internet and the advantages of the World Wide Web as a means of gathering and disseminating useful information and learning the basics of sending and receiving electronic mail (e-mail), making it easier for the student to navigate online services.

Prerequisite: Basic computer skills required.

Web Page Design (Introduction)

The Web Page Design course allows each student to experience hands-on knowledge of how to publish information on the Internet and achieve an understanding of basic Web Page design, using HyperText Mark-up Language (HTML) and a web-based text editor (Adobe Pagemill or GoLive.)
